The City of Melville and Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce bring you the next event in the Business Breakfast series.

Responding to a public sector Request document can be overwhelmingly challenging. Deciphering the questions that are asked, knowing what information to include or to exclude, how to stand out from other suppliers; these are just a few of the common issues businesses are facing in today’s extremely competitive marketplace.

Many people make the mistake of approaching tendering without appreciating the cost of tendering, knowing how to maximise return on investment and allocating relevant and appropriate resources to the process.

This session will address all of these things, as well as providing specific insight into what the City of Melville’s tendering process is like, what we look for and how to improve your next submission.

Every year, federal, state and local governments invite the private sector to submit competitive bids for the supply of goods and services. Government tenders attract suppliers of all sizes for things ranging from office supplies to major construction projects. While state and federal government utilise some fairly consistent tools and systems which makes life a bit easier when responding to a tender, there are no set tools and templates that local governments are required to use, though procurement activities do have to comply with the Local Government Act.

The WA Local Government Association (WALGA) does provide access to toolkits which many local governments are encouraged to use however it is ultimately at the discretion of procurement managers within the specific local government as to how they will approach their tender portfolio. What makes things even more complicated is that in state and federal government, there is one central portal for tenders, but  local governments  manage this on their own –  Some use online portals, others use their website. It can take quite a lot of time to find them all.

This session has been designed to give you a place to start, some generic but competitive tools you can use to structure your submissions for tenders and some tips from a small business owner as to how to market your company and stand out from the crowd.

Some of the key topics that will be covered include:
•    Where can I find the latest tendering opportunities?
•    How do I decide whether or not it is worth tendering for an advertised opportunity?
•    How do I make my submissions stand out and improve my chances of success?
•    How does the City of Melville evaluate tenders and what do they look for?
